A Statement from Sebastian
First off I didn't win - I came second!
However the results were very encouraging - with over 20,000 South Cambs residents voting Lib Dem we increased the LD share of the vote in South Cambs by 5.8%; with a swing of 2.5% from Conservative to Liberal Democrat. Turnout was also up 6.6% on the last election - you can see the full results at The BBC Election Website.
THANK YOU to everyone who voted for me. Thank you to all the Lib Dem members and supporters who worked so incredibly hard to secure a great result - with many thousands of leaflets, cards, posters and messages delivered to the electorate across South Cambs - I am incredibly inspired by all your work. So are many others - with new Party members, new delivery networks, new supporters and many many new friends to the Liberal Democrats.
But the work continues. We had a great local election result - with the Conservatives at South Cambs District Council holding onto their majority by only one seat. We go into the summer with a team raring to go and anxious to work hard for all South Cambs residents....as we promised!
Vote!
Polling stations are open Thursday 6th May from 7am to 10pm.
We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change our political system to one which is fair and representative of the British people - and the people of South Cambridgeshire. Vote for what you believe in!
The Independent May 5th
“The surge in support for the Liberal Democrats has unlocked something precious: a feeling among the public that, for the first time in a generation, a radical overhaul of our political settlement could be possible.
Despite the drama of recent weeks, there remains a considerable risk that Britain could wake up on Friday morning to discover we are in for four or five more years of "business as usual" politics under a Conservative government.
The Liberal Democrats are longstanding and convincing champions of civil liberties, sound economics, international co-operation on the great global challenges and, of course, fundamental electoral reform. That is why we argue that there is a strong case for progressively minded voters to lend their support to the Liberal Democrats wherever there is a clear opportunity for that party to win.
It is time to use our rotten voting system (for what we fervently hope will be the last occasion) to change the system – and deliver a new politics.”
It's time we had a Parliament of 649 local people who agree policy for the Nation; reflecting how it will impact on the people who put them there; rather than what we have had so far where as soon as an MP arrives in London they seem to forget the People and focus entirely on their party and - sadly - themselves; as we have seen in this last Manure Parliament.
My concerns are local concerns. Apart from the massive development agenda I want to fight for a better funding deal for South Cambridgeshire. We need better infrastructure delivery - it is a scandal that there is still no secondary school at Cambourne or that the roads in Whittlesford look like they have been carpet-bombed. Why is Queen Edith's Way a racetrack?
We need a decent deal for people - local public transport is useless in many Parishes; with the cost of fuel how long is it before people are actively being priced out of the area - assuming they have been able to afford to stay here at all? Where are your children and grandchildren going to find affordable homes in South Cambridgeshire? With 4, 000 families on the housing waiting list this is a problem that an active MP must fight to resolve.
Of course, in a national Election campaign, we pay attention to the big issues that affect us all - the economy and the impact of the Recession, reform of Parliament and our voting system; what we want for our future...but I am also keen that when we vote we remember that ultimately the person elected must be - 100% - a servant of the citizens of South Cambridgeshire.
